Recipe: The 5-minute Golden Milk Spice Batch

The 5-minute Golden Milk Spice Batch

You may have heard about this new health trend while flipping through the pages of top fitness magazines (and for good reason) - Golden Milk, also known as Turmeric Tea has actually been for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine for its abilities to minimize inflammation in the body, aid in digestion, combat colds, detoxify the liver, soothe the nervous system (perfect for a good nights sleep), control blood sugar and purify blood. The main ingredient in Golden Milks that gives it that radiant orange colouring and is responsible for it’s healing abilities is the curcumin in turmeric. This magical spice is also known for its detoxification and skin clearing properties.

Here’s a little tip for getting the most out of this power packed phytonutrient – turmeric needs to be combined with a pinch of black pepper. This combination enhances curcumin’s bioavailability by 1,000 times due to a unique property in black pepper called piperine, which increases your body’s absorption rate by 2000%!

Another key ingredient to a wholesome Golden Milk recipe is coconut oil. This Superfood is well known for its ability to increase healthy cholesterol levels in the body, balance hormones, prevent heart disease, lower blood pressure and boost the body’s thermometric effects aiding in weight loss. Healthy fats also help you stay satiated longer while giving you a sustainable energy boost without the carb crash.

Once you have your spice batch mixed up you can keep it for up to 6 months as long as it’s stored in an airtight container, in a cool place and out of direct sunlight.

This blend can be used in more than just Golden Milk as well – add a spoonful to your overnight oats, incorporate it into your next batch of protein muffins or combine it with a warming carrot ginger or curry soup.

Now the type of milk you use to create your Golden Milk is all about your preference. You can use full fat or if you’re opting for daily free you may lean towards coconut, almond, hemp or cashew. I personally prefer cashew milk or light canned coconut milk as they create a perfectly creamy base and emulsifies well.
